Puerto Rico's Debt, Health Care Distress and How to Avert the Next Financial Crisis Among the Issues to Be Discussed at ABI's New York City Bankruptcy Conference on May 18

Alexandria, Va. — The American Bankruptcy Institute's (ABI’s) 19th annual New York City Bankruptcy Conference is scheduled for May 18 at the New York Hilton in Midtown Manhattan. The day-long conference brings together a faculty of New York-area bankruptcy judges with practitioners from the top national insolvency firms in New York City to discuss timely bankruptcy issues. The conference features an expanded workshop format: Each of the six concurrent breakout sessions will be presented twice with different panelists, offering attendees two exclusive points of view on the same topic. Additionally, a judges’ roundtable featuring a panel of bankruptcy judges from the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York will discuss current bankruptcy case developments.

 

Panel sessions include:

 

  • Puerto Rico: This session will feature an update on the current state of the distress in Puerto Rico, including PROMESA and related litigation, and other developments.
  • Deconstructing EFH: The panelists will discuss the various issues that have been raised in the Energy Future Holdings bankruptcy.
  • Health Care and Education: The panelists will delve into the various issues looming over the health care and education industries.
  • Practical Issues in Corporate Governance Before, During and Upon Emergence from Chapter 11
  • LLC Bankruptcies: This panel will focus on issues that can arise during an LLC bankruptcy.
  • Cross-Border Panel: This panel will discuss the domestic reach of the foreign stay (Sanjel) and recognition of judgments/rulings in cross-border cases.
  • Averting the Next Financial Crisis: Recapitalizing the Failing SIFI
  • Bankruptcy Litigation Update
  • Liquidating In and Out of Chapter 11
  • Equitable Mootness: This session will focus on the current state of the doctrine and recent criticisms.
  • Current Issues in the Energy Sector
  • What’s Wrong with Chapter 11?
  • Ethics Panel

 

Approval for 6.5 hours of CLE credit, including 1.25 hours of ethics, is pending in states calculating CLE on a 60-minute hour, and approval for 7.5 hours of CLE credit, including 1.5 hours of ethics, is pending in 50-minute-hour states.

 

Timothy Graulich of Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and Sean A. Gumbs of FTI Consulting, Inc. are the program chairs for the conference. Bankruptcy Judge Shelley C. Chapman (S.D.N.Y.) serves as the judicial chair.
