Katherine Catanese of Foley & Lardner Selected for ABI’s “40 Under 40”

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Katherine Catanese of Foley & Lardner (New York) has been selected for ABI’s “40 Under 40,” recognizing 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. This year’s awardees will be formally recognized at ABI’s 2018 Winter Leadership Conference, taking place Dec. 6-8 at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Catanese focuses her practice on the representation of post-confirmation trusts and trustees, as well as on the representation of investors and managers in hedge funds in onshore and offshore accounts in bankruptcy ligation, including involuntary bankruptcies and chapter 15 bankruptcy. Additionally, she focuses her practice on the representation of court-appointed receivers in Chinese reverse-merger cases where the U.S. entity has “gone dark” and returned to China, leaving their U.S. investors without recourse. Catanese has also represented banks and trustees of bank holding companies, and she has extensive experience in the representation of trustees regarding the resolution and objection to bankruptcy claims, the pursuit of fraudulent-transfer and preference actions, and litigation related to bad-faith bankruptcy filings, Ponzi schemes and § 363 sales.

Catanese is particularly devoted to pro bono legal work, and she represents various innocence projects across the country. She is very proud of the results achieved from her work on an amicus brief for the Innocence Project in New York City that led to the release of a woman imprisoned for almost a decade because of junk science related to fiber evidence. She also represents New York Law School’s legal services and innocence project work, as well as low-income individuals in adoption matters in New York.

Catanese earned her B.A. summa cum laude in psychology in 2001 and her J.D. cum laude in 2004, both from Michigan State University.

“The 2018 ABI ‘40 Under 40’ Class is already advancing the bankruptcy profession forward,” said ABI Executive Director Samuel J. Gerdano. “Each of these remarkable young men and women are attaining achievements not just in their professional careers, but also as leaders in their communities.”

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Nominations were submitted via the initiative’s website, through which professionals nominated themselves or a colleague. Membership in ABI was not required, and more than 200 candidates were evaluated. Those selected were chosen from both large and small firms from every region of the country, and represent diverse practice areas such as law, finance, accounting, consulting, academia, government and more.
