Alexandria, Va.— ABI announces that Prof. Brook E. Gotberg of the University of Missouri Law School (Columbia, Mo.) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s annual program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. Honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony during ABI’s 2019 Winter Leadership Conference, taking place Dec. 5-7 at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Prof. Gotberg joined the University of Missouri Law School's faculty in 2016, where she teaches Bankruptcy, Contracts, Secured Transactions, Securities Regulation and other commercial law subjects. Prof. Gotberg’s scholarship focuses primarily on debtor and creditor relations, both in and out of bankruptcy. She has published articles on the treatment of preferential transfers in the Bankruptcy Code, the jurisdiction of bankruptcy judges and, more generally, the laws and policies shaping business reorganization in the U.S. In addition to her publications, Prof. Gotberg has presented on such topics as the relationship between medical insurance and bankruptcy, student debt in bankruptcy, Puerto Rico’s debt crisis, and the impact of recent Supreme Court decisions on bankruptcy proceedings.

Prior to joining the law faculty, Prof. Gotberg was an academic fellow for the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. She also practiced commercial law with Sullivan & Cromwell in Los Angeles, litigating a variety of cases from large antitrust suits to minor contract disputes, and she represented both debtors and creditors in bankruptcy court. She is a former clerk to Hon. Milan D. Smith Jr. of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and Hon. Thomas B. Donovan of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California. Prof. Gotberg received her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2008 and graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in 2005 with a B.A. in political science.

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Nominations were submitted via the initiative’s website, through which professionals nominated themselves or a colleague. Membership in ABI was not required, and more than 350 candidates were evaluated. Those selected were chosen from both large and small firms from every region of the country, and represent diverse practice areas such as law, finance, accounting, consulting, academia, government and more.
