Prof. Lois Lupica Wins ABIs Third Annual Judge Wes Steen Law Review Writing Prize

Alexandria, Va. — Prof. Lois R. Lupica of the University of Maine School of Law (Portland, Maine) won the American Bankruptcy Institute’s (ABI) Third Annual Judge Wes Steen ABI Law Review Writing Prize for her lead article, "The Consumer Bankruptcy Fee Study: Final Report," which appeared in the 2012 Spring edition of the ABI Law Review. Prof. Lupica, the reporter and principal investigator for the ABI Endowment-funded Consumer Fee Study, was awarded $5,000 for her work on the article. A professor since 1995, Prof. Lupica previously practiced law at both Arnold & Porter LLP and White & Case LLP in New York. She is a Fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy and actively involved in numerous professional and academic organizations. Prof. Lupica was awarded the Faculty Senate Award for Excellence in Scholarship in 2004 and received Honorable Mention for the National Award for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching Professionalism, sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism and the Conference of Chief Justices in 2005. She has served as dean of faculty and as a member of the Executive Board of the American Board of Certification, and she has been a co-coach and faculty advisor for the Duberstein Moot Court Competition in New York since 2005. Prof. Lupica served as ABI’s Resident Scholar for the Spring 2007 Semester. Most recently, she served as the co-reporter for ABI’s National Ethics Task Force. The prize’s namesake, Bankruptcy Judge Wesley Steen, retired from the bench in January after 17 years of distinguished service in both the Southern District of Texas and the Middle District of Louisiana. The only judge to ever serve as ABI President (2006-07), he was also a member of the ABI Law Review advisory board. To honor Judge Steen, ABI established an annual ABI Law Review prize in 2010 in his name for the best article as selected by the advisory board. This year’s award was presented to Prof. Lupica at ABI’s Annual Spring Meeting on April 20, 2013. ### ABI is the largest multi-disciplinary, nonpartisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency.
