Prof. Pamela Foohey of Indiana University’s Mauerer School of Law Selected as One of ABI’s 2019 “40 Under 40”

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Prof. Pamela Foohey of Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law (Bloomington, Ind.) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s annual program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. Honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony during ABI’s 2019 Winter Leadership Conference, taking place Dec. 5-7 at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Prof. Foohey joined the IU Maurer School of Law faculty in 2014 after two years as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Law. She chairs the Center for Law, Society & Culture’s advisory board. Prof. Foohey's research centers on bankruptcy, commercial law and consumer law. Her work primarily involves empirical studies of bankruptcy and related parts of the legal system, combining quantitative and qualitative, interview-based research. Prof. Foohey's work in business bankruptcy focuses on nonprofit entities, with a particular emphasis on how churches and other religious organizations use bankruptcy. She is also a co-investigator on the Consumer Bankruptcy Project, a long-term research project studying persons who file bankruptcy that has been the leading empirical study on consumer bankruptcy for the past 35 years.

Prof. Foohey received the Gavel Award in 2017 for outstanding contribution to the graduating class; in 2018, she received the IU Trustees' Teaching Award for excellence in teaching; and in 2019, she received the Leon H. Wallace Teaching Award, the highest teaching honor given to IU Maurer School of Law faculty. Prof. Foohey is the current chair of the Creditors’ and Debtors’ Rights Section of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), and she is a past chair of the AALS Section on Commercial and Related Consumer Law. She is a current member of the executive committees of the AALS Sections on Commercial and Related Consumer Law, Law and the Social Sciences, and Real Estate Transactions, and she co-chairs the Law and Society Association’s Household Finance Collaborative Research Network. Prof. Foohey currently serves on the editorial advisory board of the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, a peer-reviewed academic law review published by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. She received her J.D. cum laude from Harvard University Law School in 2008 and her B.S. summa cum laude from New York University in 2004.

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Nominations were submitted via the initiative’s website, through which professionals nominated themselves or a colleague. Membership in ABI was not required, and more than 350 candidates were evaluated. Those selected were chosen from both large and small firms from every region of the country, and represent diverse practice areas such as law, finance, accounting, consulting, academia, government and more.
