SAUL EHRENPREIS OF THE UNIVERISTY OF MARYLAND SCHOOL OF LAW WINS ABI’S THIRD ANNUAL LAW STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION

April 6, 2011, Alexandria, Va.— Saul Ehrenpreis of the University of Maryland School of Law won the American Bankruptcy Institute’s Third Annual Bankruptcy Law Student Writing Competition. Ehrenpreis’ paper, “Trademark Licenses in Bankruptcy,” received the highest overall score from a judging panel of leaders from ABI’s Bankruptcy Litigation Committee, which sponsored the competition. Announced as the winner at ABI’s 29th Annual Spring Meeting, Ehrenpreis will receive a $1,000 cash prize, publication of the paper in the ABI Journal and a one-year ABI membership. Prior to submission, Prof. Michelle Harner of the University of Maryland School of Law reviewed Ehrenpreis’ paper.
 
Gregory Pesce of the University of Chicago Law School received second place for his paper “The Irrelevance of Philadelphia Newspapers.” Pesce will receive a cash award of $750, publication of the paper in a future ABI committee newsletter and a one-year ABI membership. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Sontchi (D. Del.; Wilmington), who is a frequent ABI lecturer and alumni of the University of Chicago Law School, reviewed Pesce’s paper prior to submission. Christopher Rubino of St. John’s University School of Law received third place for his paper, “Court Holds that Overpaid Taxes Cannot Be Turned Over to the Estate.” He will be presented a cash award of $500, publication of the paper in a future ABI committee newsletter and a one-year ABI membership. Prior to submission, Prof. Kevin Baum of St. John’s University School of Law reviewed Rubino’s paper.

Law students submitted papers from Jan 1-March 1 for the competition, which focused on on current issues regarding matters such as bankruptcy sales, plan confirmation and other topics that involve jurisdiction, litigation or evidence in the bankruptcy courts. All papers were reviewed by a law professor prior to submission and were then judged on style, substance and relevance by a panel of bankruptcy experts, including a bankruptcy judge, former U.S. Trustee and several practitioners. Invotex Group, Inc. sponsored the first-place prize while Jenner & Block LLP sponsored the second-place prize and McGuireWoods LLP sponsored the third-place prize.
