David A. Mawhinney of K&L Gates LLP Selected as One of ABI’s 2019 “40 Under 40”

Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that David A. Mawhinney of K&L Gates LLP (Boston) has been selected as one of ABI’s “40 Under 40,” ABI’s annual program that recognizes 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. Honorees will be recognized at a special ceremony during ABI’s 2019 Winter Leadership Conference, taking place Dec. 5-7 at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Mawhinney is an associate in the Boston office of K&L Gates, where his practice focuses on restructuring and insolvency and commercial litigation. He has represented a variety of parties in business and consumer bankruptcy cases, with an emphasis on corporate debtors in chapter 11 and mortgage-holders in chapter 13 consumer cases.

In 2012, while clerking for Hon. Frank J. Bailey at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts, Mawhinney helped develop what has become an annual program for the district and appeals court clerks of the First Circuit called “Introduction to Bankruptcy Law and the Bankruptcy System.” This session provides a general overview of bankruptcy law, procedure and jurisdiction, and features insolvency practitioners and bankruptcy judges on the faculty.

In 2018, Mawhinney became a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges “Next Generation” Program. He received his J.D. cum laude from Boston College Law School in 2011 and his B.A. summa cum laude from Boston College in 2002. Prior to entering law school, Mawhinney worked as a theater performer in New York City. He is a graduate of the American Repertory Theater Institute in Cambridge, Mass., and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Moscow Art Theater in Russia.

“This 2019 class of honorees is incredibly accomplished and diverse, and well representative of the multidisciplinary nature of our community,” said ABI Executive Director Samuel J. Gerdano. “We look forward to engaging these young leaders in the full range of ABI's activities, in service to the profession.”
