Alexandria, Va. ABI announces that Leland Murphree of Maynard Cooper & Gale, P.C. (Birmingham, Ala.) has been selected for ABI’s “40 Under 40,” recognizing 40 of the top insolvency industry professionals under the age of 40. This year’s awardees will be formally recognized at ABI’s 2018 Winter Leadership Conference, taking place Dec. 6-8 at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Murphree is a shareholder and co-chair of Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C.’s Bankruptcy and Restructuring Group, where he assists creditors, debtors, committees and fiduciaries in chapter 11 and receivership proceedings. He also focuses on out-of-court workouts, restructurings, and distressed M&A and investing. He has been recognized for his expertise in Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers.

Murphree is the president of the Turnaround Management Association’s Alabama Chapter and past chairman of the Alabama State Bar Bankruptcy & Commercial Law Section. In his leadership roles, he has advanced many initiatives in insolvency matters. As chairman of the ASB Bankruptcy & Commercial Law Section, he helped form and lead the Alabama Bankruptcy Pro Bono Task Force, bringing attorneys, judges and volunteer lawyer programs (VLPs) together from across Alabama to identify common issues with providing low-income debtors with representation in bankruptcy. He also secured free software licenses from BestCase for all VLPs in Alabama and helped obtain a conflicts opinion from the Alabama State Bar, allowing more lawyers to represent low-income debtors in bankruptcy.

Murphree recently served on the Alabama Law Institute’s Committee on Uniform Fraudulent/Voidable Transfer Laws, resulting in the passage of the Alabama Uniform Voidable Transactions Act, No. 2018-163.

“The 2018 ABI ‘40 Under 40’ Class is already advancing the bankruptcy profession forward,” said ABI Executive Director Samuel J. Gerdano. “Each of these remarkable young men and women are attaining achievements not just in their professional careers, but also as leaders in their communities.”

The “40 Under 40” winners are distinguished by professional achievements and service and were selected by a group of experienced professionals from ABI’s current leadership. Nominations were submitted via the initiative’s website, through which professionals nominated themselves or a colleague. Membership in ABI was not required, and more than 200 candidates were evaluated. Those selected were chosen from both large and small firms from every region of the country, and represent diverse practice areas such as law, finance, accounting, consulting, academia, government and more.
